In the studio... with Marmalade Sky

We took a step into our resale collective partner Marmalade Sky’s studio and chatted to their founder Sarah Ives  about the brand, the inspiration behind their designs, and how they counteract waste through their production!

What made you want to launch Marmalade Sky, and how did you get started?

Marmalade Sky began 9 years ago after the birth of my eldest son. I didn’t want to dress him in cheesy logos and stereotypical boy prints but my intention was never anything more than dressing him. Originally I was a womenswear designer, so I used this skill to design fabrics and make clothes for my son.  But after countless compliments and numerous requests from other mums I realised others felt the same and there was a gap in the market… and just like that, the Marmalade Sky was born.

What’s a typical day in the office/studio like for you?

It's  super varied day-to-day as I’m involved in every step of the process… From designing, cutting out, sewing, postage & packing, social media, admin … and making a cuppa tea!

And talk us a bit through your creative process - where does your inspiration come from, and where and how does a Marmalade Sky garment come to life?

It all stems from my own children - what they like and what I’d like them to wear! The inspiration for my prints varies from current fashion trends to my doodles. We manufacture everything very local in Sheffield, using a team of machinists locally - which has been a wonderful experience for me. We’re also made-to-order business.. which means nothing goes to waste! We make what we need, when we need it.

"We make what we need, when we need it."

How does circularity come into your design?

All designs are created to be gender-neutral, so Marmalade Sky clothes are able to be passed down to younger siblings or friends! None of our collections are mass-produced, and each piece is lovingly handmade and designed to last. As well as being made-to-order, we also try to use every last teeny bit of fabric, which usually results in the cutest little baby bonnets!

And lastly, do you have a favourite piece in your current collection?

That’s a tricky one! But the new ladybug print makes me smile every time - so probably that print, which you can get made in our new gym romper shape!

As part of the dotte resale collective, when you sell Marmalade Sky on our marketplace, you’ll get a 20% discount code to spend on their new season. That's our way of saying thank you for extending the lifespan of your children's clothing! Click here to start selling today.
